‘Ant-Man’ First Look: See Paul Rudd as the Latest Marvel Superhero

After a tumultuous few months that left many wondering whether it would even happen at all, Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man‘ officially began filming yesterday in San Francisco. Not 24 hours later, we have our first look at star Paul Rudd, our newest superhero entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In this particular shot, which comes to us via USA Today, Rudd is looking more like con-man Scott Lang, than superhero Ant-Man. But, before he can become Ant-Man, he has to help his friend and mentor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) protect the Pym Particles.

Officially announced to feature in ‘Ant-Man’ are Bobby Cannavale (‘Annie,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire‘), Michael Peña (‘End of Watch‘), Abby Ryder Fortson (‘Togetherness’), Judy Greer (‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Archer‘), David Dastmalchian (‘Prisoners’), Wood Harris (‘The Wire’), John Slattery (‘Mad Men‘), Gregg Turkington (‘The Comedy,’ ‘On Cinema’) and rapper T.I. (also known for roles in ‘American Gangster’ and ‘Takers’).

We do know that, in addition to Rudd and Douglas as original Ant-Man Hank Pym, Lilly assumes the role of Hope van Dyne/Hank Pym’s daughter/Wasp, and Stoll becomes the villain Darren Cross/Yellowjacket. Here’s the official synopsis:

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Filming on exteriors is taking place in San Francisco before moving to Atlanta for the remainder of the shoot.

It was back in May that we learned Edgar Wright was leaving the film he had been developing for over eight years. Numerous directors were rumored to replace him, including Adam McKay (‘Anchorman’), who eventually passed on directing, but stayed on to help work on the script. (We still don’t know who will get credit on the ‘Ant-Man’ script is all said and done. Much of the bones of the script comes from Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, but both have been left out of all press releases since their departure.)

Peyton Reed was eventually announced as the permanent replacement and while we’ll always be a little sad we won’t get to see Edgar Wright’s Marvel movie, Reed is about as good a replacement as you could find and we remain optimistic.

‘Ant-Man’ will hit theaters on July 17, 2015
