If you text when driving not only are you putting your life at risk, you are risking the lives of other people. Between cell phones, passengers and eating - there are a lot of ways to be distracted while driving. Michigan State Police are not playing this month. April is 'National Distracted Driving Month'.

According to the MSP website there are 3 main types of distractions. I am sure most of us are guilty of one if not all of these. Save yourself some cash and follow the rules of road.

There are three main types of distraction:

  • Visual - taking your eyes off the road
  • Manual - taking your hands off the wheel
  • Cognitive - taking your mind off of what you're doing

Distracting activities include:

  • Using a cell phone and/or texting
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a PDA or navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Changing the radio station, CD, or MP3 player.
