Beastie Boys’ Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz will appear in the upcoming Ben Stiller-starring film, While We’re Young, which hits theaters this Friday, March 27. However, as Horvotiz sits down to do press for the film, he’s perpetually answering questions about his past rather than his future. Since the death of his bandmate and friend Adam “MCA” Yauch nearly three years ago, the Beastie Boys’ future has been sort of suspended in a strange limbo — at least in the minds of fans. But in a recent interview, Horovtiz makes it very plain that without Yauch, there are no Beastie Boys.

“We’re done,” Horvotiz told GQ in an interview. “Adam Yauch started the band. It’s not like a thing where we could continue without him.”

“It’s one thing when you’re in a band in high school, but then to have it last for so long — that’s who I am and what I did forever,” he added. “And so now I’m just trying to figure it out.”

When asked if the his new self-discovery poses a “fun challenge,” Horovitz said no; instead, the “scale tips way more to the very sad and depressed” end of the spectrum.

“Adam was one of my best friends; I saw him more than I saw my whole family,” he said. “You know, me, Adam and Mike [Diamond] were together every day, recording, touring, as friends. And so: huge hole.”

However, Horovitz says that the freedom Beastie Boys has given him in his career has also allowed him the time to grieve and process his friend’s passing.

“The other part of it is the being able to afford to just sit around and think, because I think it’s good that I can have time to sort of figure out how to get through it all,” he continued. “But you know, if I had to go work a job, I’d work a job and just, you know, not be able to think about it.”
