Everyone was excited for the titular villain to make his live action debut in the upcoming 'X-Men: Apocalypse.' Then they released an official image of the big bad and the reaction has been, well, less than warm.

Here's a sure-fire formula for pissing off the internet:

  1. Put a beloved fictional character in movie
  2. Make said character look nothing like his previous iterations

Granted, you can piss off the internet fanboys by doing ANYTHING, but this time the outrage seems warranted. It's not that the movie can't be good because of this, it might be amazing, actually. The problem is that the comic book version of Apocalypse is one of the most sinister and terrifying villains in the Marvel Universe, and his look has a lot to do with that. He's very tall, very muscular and has gray skin. None of those things are true about his movie counterpart.

The departure from the classic character's look might have been a welcome change if it looked way cooler than we imagined was possible (it doesn't) or was a completely innovative look (it REALLY isn't). In fact, a number of people have noticed just how unoriginal this bastardization of Apocalypse is. He may not be the end of mankind as we know it, but he could be the end of the X-Men... franchise. At least some good has come of from costume fail -- the reactions have been hilarious!
