‘Captain America: Civil War’ Will Ignore ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Inhumans
It’s well-documented at this point that Marvel movies take no cue from the multiple TV tie-ins, most always the other way around, though Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3's worldwide introduction of Marvel’s Inhumans seemed at least potentially worth a mention. Not so, apparently, as Captain America: Civil War’s writers had no awareness of the TV branch in crafting Cap’s international adventure.
You’re warned of at least some Marvel spoilers from here on out, but where Captain America: Civil War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have already specified that the film won’t incorporate the “Stamford Incident” that kicked off the comic conflict of the same name, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s introduction of worldwide super-powers won’t necessarily factor in either. As outlined by HitFix, the writers were asked last summer if the Terrigen outbreak within fish oil capsules spread any awareness of superhumans through the MCU, eliciting a puzzled response:
Markus admitted he was behind on the show, “I have to confess, having come here, I’ve seen no TV since I got here in April. I haven’t seen the vast majority of this season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ There’s fish oil?”
McFeely was just as lost. “Is there really fish oil? What are you talking about?”
Granted, it’s at least plausible that Civil War could reflect a general growing trend of super-powers and vigilantes, without requiring Markus or McFeely’s specific knowledge of how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced them. It wouldn’t be the first time poor Coulson was left out of the loop, however, as the Inhumans movie itself isn’t likely to feature any of Agents’ groundwork, and even Joss Whedon acknowledges the TV shows get “leftovers” from the films.
We’ll see for ourselves when Captain America: Civil War arrives in theaters on May 6, while Agents likely builds some connection through its upcoming return, but will the TV branch ever get acknowledgement from the films?
