Face It, Tiger, the Early Buzz for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Is Pretty Great

According to census estimates, there are currently 325.3 million people in the United States, which means there has to be dozens  —  maybe even hundreds!  —  of people who remain blissfully unaware that a new Spider-Man movie is hitting theaters this summer. The rest of us, however, have lived through the past several months of production rumors, trailers, teasers, teaser trailers, toy reveals, interviews, commercials, specials, features, articles, social advertising, news items, and just about any other form of audio or visual media that Marvel could commercially or organically slap a Spider-Man: Homecoming logo on. In fact, we’ve reached that point in the hype cycle where most fans are completely exhausted with marketing. Can’t we just start talking about the movie itself?

Jared Leto Teases His Possible Involvement in ‘Gotham City Sirens’

The spotlight in the DC Extended Universe is squarely on women right now. Wonder Woman is still tying moviegoers in knots; just one more good weekend will make it the second biggest DCEU movie in the U.S., and it could pass Batman v Superman for the top spot not long after. Princess Diana will get back in the spotlight in Justice League this fall, and last summer was all about Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn stealing scenes from Will Smith and the rest of the Suicide Squad. Basically DC sisters are doing it for themselves.

Jar Jar Begs Ron Howard for ‘Han Solo’ Screentime in New Funny or Die Video

The news that Ron Howard would take the directorial reins on Han Solo from Chris Miller and Phil Lord was met with a mixed reception by the ardent Star Wars fanbase. Some remembered Howard as the director behind Apollo 13, a movie partially set in outer space (the same location as much of Han Solo, presumably!), and figured he’d be right for the job. Others had fresher recollections of Ron Howard’s Inferno, a.k.a. Bad Tom Hanks Hairpiece 3, and expressed some misgivings. But today, one ardent supporter of Howard‘s has made a statement from the shadows on why he’s a perfect fit for the franchise, though he may have some rubbery, alien skin in the game.

What Really Happened With Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s ‘Han Solo’ Departure

If you’ve made use of the internet in the past week, then you may very well be aware of a recent personnel change-up on the set of the gestating Han Solo spinoff film. Original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are out, Ron Howard’s in, but as with most showbiz behind-the-scenes drama, the details have been kept under wraps. That is, until The Hollywood Reporter ran an illuminating new item this morning, getting the dish on what really drove the two filmmakers away from this project. The catch-all code word of “creative differences” does not even come close to doing justice to the antipathy between the Lord-Miller brain trust and Lucasfilm.

Explore the World of ‘Blade Runner 2049’ in New Featurette

Denis Villeneuve’s getting ready to tie a ribbon on Blade Runner 2049. The French filmmaker behind Arrival told Entertainment Weekly that “we are running towards the finishing line right now” on the production due for release October 6, and added that “we are elated. It feels like Christmas as we look at the completed shots.” But directors of generously budgeted studio projects have to say that, nonspecific positivity is pretty much written right into their contracts. Footage, however, cannot lie, and so it’s enticing news indeed that Villeneuve’s little exclusive with EW comes packaged with a new featurette including fresh frames from the hotly anticipated sequel.

Colin Trevorrow Asked ‘The Last Jedi’ Crew to Shoot Something For ‘Episode IX’

Just how far in advance is this overarching Star Wars saga planned out? Episode VIII, The Last Jedi, is on post-production now and headed to theaters this winter. Episode IX is in development, building off the events of that film. So how much of Episode VIII was set in stone, and when, to give Episode IX enough time to be fully developed and fleshed out? And is that movie setting the stage for an Episode X, and so on and so forth? These are the questions a man thinks to himself when he writes on the interwebs all day.

Matt Reeves Says He’s Going Hitchcock for ‘The Batman’

Matt Reeves is the type of director who makes action movies that are primarily character studies: the character-driven empathy of the Planet of the Apes movies were a pleasant surprise and departure from what could have been just another big-budget CGI soup. Reeves is a director who makes you care about the people in his movies, which is why he might be the best choice to direct Ben Affleck’s The Batman after Affleck himself stepped down. Reeves’ work on War for the Planet of the Apes is done, and now that he can turn his attention to his DC movie, he already knows which director he’ll turn to for guidance.

‘Venom’ and ‘Silver and Black’ Will Take Place in the Same Universe as ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

For months now, we’ve assumed that any possible Spider-Man spinoffs would exist in a world separate from that of Spider-Man: Homecoming. With Sony and Marvel weaving a complicated web of licensed properties and revenue sharing, the safe bet was that Sony would choose to build up its own parallel world independent of Marvel’s, giving them complete ownership of those characters and their events without having to plug into a larger established canon. This seemed to be confirmed by Marvel boss Kevin Feige earlier this week, when Feige said in no uncertain terms that Venom would not be invited to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disappointing for some, curious to others, but on the surface, it did make sense.

Iden Versio is a Total Bad-Ass in Star Wars Battlefront II’s Story Mode [Preview]

The Star Wars franchise is no stranger to strong leading women fighting for the Rebel Alliance, but it's a bit more uncommon for the Empire's female allies to get the same recognition. Villains like Asajj Ventress and Doctor Aphra have become fan favorites not just because they're women, but because they show a side of the galactic conflict rarely seen. After seeing a brief portion of the Star Wars Battlefront II single-player campaign in action, it won't be surprising at all to see Commander Iden Versio join those memorable ranks this fall.

Edgar Wright Isn’t Big on Sequels, But Won’t Say ‘Never’ to a ‘Hot Fuzz 2’

In a few short weeks, the general public will get to lay eyes on Edgar Wright’s latest film Baby Driver, which, as has been made clear multiple times elsewhere on this very web site, is absurdly good. Like, unaccountably good. How is the movie so good? Explain yourself, Wright! While he has not yet owned up to whatever dark sorcery made his new film such a blast, Wright has been discussing plenty of other matters as he’s made the rounds on the interview circuit in support of Baby Driver. And the folks at Movie Web wanted the answer to one question in specific: where’s the man stand on sequels?
