Gwar Frontman Dave Brockie Dies at 50

Metal Blade

Gwar‘s frontman Dave Brockie has died at the age of 50. The singer, who goes by the name Oderus Urungus, was reportedly found by his roommate yesterday.

According to Style Weekly, Brockie, who founded Gwar in Richmond, Va., in 1984, was found dead in his Richmond home between 3 and 7PM. There are no details on the cause of death at this time.

The thrash-metal band, best known for its gruesome costumes and wild stage shows, released its 13th album, ‘Battle Maximus,’ last year. Brockie was the only consistent member of the group, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

“Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I’ve known,” former Gwar bassist Mike Bishop told Style Weekly. “He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art.”

Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe — also a Richmond native — paid tribute to his friend on Instagram with some words (“Dave TRULY WAS ONE OF A KIND”) and a photo of Brockie kissing a birthday cake shaped like Oderus’ head.

Gwar recently returned from a tour of Australia, where they caused a bit of controversy after they decapitated an effigy of the country’s prime minister. In the mid-’90s, the band was nominated for two Grammys, one for Best Metal Performance and another for Best Long Form Music Video for ‘Phallus in Wonderland.’
