It was just announced that a second sequel to the greatest game ever made is on the way. That's right 'Streets of Rage 4' is a real thing that is happening and we have the trailer!

No matter who you are, you can't deny Streets of Rage 2's status as one of the greatest video games ever made. Not only was it fun when it came out, but it's one of those rare gems that still holds up today. If you need more convincing, there's a classic article on Funny or Die that makes much more of a compelling argument than I have time to make here. Besides, I'm not here to convert the non-believers.

This article is for those who have bled on the mean streets (of rage) and still see a weapon every time they look at a beer bottle. If you've ever done a backflip tornado kick on rollerskates after eating a whole turkey -- I have good news. Our glory days have returned once again.

Sega (in association with some game companies I've never heard of) are bringing us back 2 the Streets of Rage 4 more. You see what I did there? That's right, they've resurrected the franchise after 24 years with a brand new sequel to the classic beat 'em trilogy.

There are no details as to which system(s) the game will be released for, but they'd be fools to not release it cross-platform. If this is just a mobile game I'm going to fight somebody for real. SoR4 boasts a slick new animated style (not sure how I feel about that yet), but the gameplay is reminiscent of the classic streets upon which we all loved to rage, something that is confirmed by the game's press release:

"Streets of Rage 4 builds upon the classic trilogy’s gameplay with new mechanics, a fresh story and a gauntlet of dangerous stages with a serious crime problem. Streets of Rage 4 recalls classic gameplay but it stands as an entirely original arcade-style romp thanks to the expertise of Guard Crush Games and Dotemu."

Sounds good to me. A much more grizzled-looking Axle, as well as Blaze, have returned for part 4, but no word on other returning characters. That is unless of course, you consider "braised chicken on a pristine plate" as a returning character. And here I've been calling it turkey for a quarter century. The press release also indicates that co-op play is back as well, as was the case in previous installments.

There is no release date as of yet, but I'm hoping for this year. In the meantime, check out some screenshots of the game below.
