Regardless of how many stories have surfaced substantiating the evidence that police officers are not out there scouring the streets looking for citizens to help, it never ceases to amaze us how many people are still convinced that calling the law is always the best solution.

Earlier last week, a Flint woman, who has been kept anonymous for obvious reasons, called the police on her son after she caught him holding a bag of marijuana. According to reports, the woman put a call in to the Flint police department for their assistance on the matter.

When officers arrived, the anti-marijuana mom told them that she discovered a bag of marijuana on her juvenile son. The police, of course, were happy to assist her. They seized the weed and then carted her boy off to jail.

The minor was charged with possession of marijuana. Possessing any amount of marijuana in the state of Michigan, under these circumstances, is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 1 year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Although some cities have voted to decriminalize the herb, state law still dictates prosecution.

Flint voters elected to decriminalize marijuana several years ago, but the law does not apply to individuals under the age of 19.  With this in consideration, this mother may have just earned her son 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Please stop calling the police over marijuana.
