Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins will step out from behind the kit to portray punk icon Iggy Pop in the upcoming film ‘CBGB,’ which is about New York’s now-closed, legendary punk rock venue.

Hawkins has been known to trade spots with Dave Grohl during Foo Fighters shows, usually when tackling cover songs with guest musicians. Now the stickman will take a spot behind the microphone as someone else — Iggy Pop.

According to Billboard, Hawkins has been officially cast to portray the frontman of punk rock dynamos Iggy and the Stooges in the upcoming film ‘CBGB. The popular and renowned punk venue may have closed its doors in 2008, but will now have it’s story told to millions on the big screen. The club is known for helping to launch the careers of the Ramones, Blondie and countless other bands.

Hawkins joins the cast which includes Alan Rickman — best known as the villainous Hans Gruber from the original ‘Die Hard’ and his role as Severus Snape in the ‘Harry Potter’ films — Malin Ackerman (‘Watchmen,’ ‘Rock of Ages’) and Joel David Moore (‘Grandma’s Boy,’ ‘Avatar’).

The film will be centered on longtime club owner Hilly Kristal (Rickman) and his club’s pivotal role in rock history. Production on the project is set to begin in late June in Savannah, Gerogia, before making the move to New York City.

Taylor isn’t the only Foo Fighter making a foray into film, as Dave Grohl is currently directing a documentary on (the ironically pivotal in rock history yet also now-closed) Sound City Studios. Grohl’s rock-doc is set to be coupled with a star-studded soundtrack, both of which will likely be released in 2013.
