Ever since Mad Max: Fury Road opened in theaters this summer, fans have been clamoring for updates on potential sequels. Director George Miller has abided that talk saying that while he wants to shoot a smaller movie first he had planned two additional Mad Max films. That’s the good news. The bad news? Miller now says he has no plans to return to direct any of those films.

The New York Post’s Page Six column caught up with Miller at the Golden Globes where he reportedly told them:

I won’t make more ‘Mad Max’ movies. ‘Fury Road’ was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it’s considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again… I’ve shot in Australia in a field of wildflowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours. Those Mad Maxes take forever. I won’t do those any more.

It’s worth noting that Page Six is a notorious gossip column so whatever is attributed to Miller should be taken with a grain of salt. Yet, it’s not surprising to hear that Miller, currently 70 years old, may not be too eager to return to the grueling shoot of Fury Road. That quote above echoes what he said in October of last year: “We shot Fury Road for eight months … that’s a lot. Every day in the heat and the dust, doing these stunts, it’s very wearing.” The shoot took over 120 days and was primarily in the deserts of Namibia. Previously Charlize Theron had talked about her reluctance to return and go through it all over again.

Just because Miller seems to be retiring from the world of Mad Max doesn’t mean that another Mad Max movie won’t happen. Miller has no shortage of ideas and would likely assist in the development of any sequels before handing the reins to another director.

Of course the question is who could possibly replace George Miller on a Mad Max movie? Give us your suggestions below and we’ll compile our favorites into a new list.
