There's bound to be some strong debate over the singer of The Story So Far kicking a girl that rushed the stage to take a selfie back into the crowd.

The Story So Far is pop punk band from California with a respectable following, who are currently on tour promoting their most recent album. Thanks to their singer's questionable behavior during a show at the Toronto Mod Club on April 10th, they find themselves in the middle of an ongoing public debate fueled by several recent instances of performer-on-fan violence.

During the final song of their set, a girl rushes the stage and begins readying her phone to take a selfie. Singer Parker Cannon, whose back was turned initially, then spotted the girl and delivered a Liu Kang flying dragon kick to the middle of her back, sending her back to crowd from whence she came. Not that this justifies the action, but the crowd appeared to approve of said response... probably because selfie takers are often obnoxious. However, there are two ways to look at this story:

In Defense of the Victim

Is violence against women acceptable? Absolutely not. Is drop-kicking a girl in the middle of the back sending her face first off of a raised platform acceptable? Nope. In fact, it's never acceptable for a man to hit a woman. We're not sure what the aftermath of the kick was, but this girl could've been seriously injured or killed. Good luck having a career after being branded "the singer that killed a fan for taking a selfie."

The Other Side

Honestly, I'm not trying to condone how this guy handled it. It wasn't the right way to handle it. However, fans should realize that most singers are not "normal people." Not everyone that fronts a band is going to be Dave "Mr. Nicest Rock Dude of All-Time" Grohl. The path to success at the front of a rock band is a strange road that often requires the avoidance of regular-people responsibilities, and the embracing of highly narcissistic, and sometimes sociopathic personality traits and behaviors.

I'm not saying singers are always like this. It's probably not even the case most of the time, but there are always a chance that the singer of a band could be a "dick." Every single time you overstep your boundaries, as a fan, you are rolling the dice with your safety. Even if it's not the singer, odds are that someone in the band, road crew, or security might have a chip on their shoulder and take you out in an overzealous fashion. They are not entitled to do so, but if you walk into oncoming traffic -- don't be surprised if you get struck by a vehicle.

After the horrific murder of Dimebag Darrell, attitudes toward people jumping onstage have changed greatly. Many musicians are strongly opposed to such things, so try to be conscious of that when you go to a concert. You are there to be an audience member. Think of your ticket as an unspoken agreement between you and the band that they are there to perform onstage for you, and you're there to watch. If you violate that agreement, you may not like the results and you may be dealt with by people who are not that great at making important life decisions. It's not perfect, but that's the way it is. Plua, you're free to take as many selfies as you'd like at home.

This isn't the first time this singer has kicked someone for taking a selfie onstage. You can see another incident that took place in Houston last year below.
