If Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn were to do a Man of Steel sequelif he would do it — he knows exactly the kind of vibe he’d try to go for. It seems like Warner Bros. has figured out that grimdark may not be the way to go with their current iteration of the Justice League, and Vaughn may have the solution.

While talking to Collider about his new movie Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Vaughn again confirmed that he’d spoken to Warner Bros., and said that he’d definitely want his Superman movie to be more upbeat.

Weirdly if I did do Superman—and I made the mistake of telling someone yesterday I have spoken about it and then wallop (laughs)—I think my main take would be, it’s really boring but make a Superman film. I just don’t feel a proper Superman—I think Donner did it to perfection for that time. Just doing the modern—I wanna do a modern version of the Donner [version]. Go back to the source material… For me Superman is color, feel-good, heroic. He’s a beacon of light in darkness. And that’s what I think Superman should be.

The Richard Donner Superman is, of course, the Superman movie starring Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando, a fun, family-friendly superhero movie that’s about as far from Batman v. Superman as one could get. And it’s probably exactly what the current franchise needs, as there are rumors floating around that the reshoots are lightening up certain characters’ tones. The Comic Con trailer put Wonder Woman — the most well-liked of the heroes – front and center, so it does look like WB is definitely starting to rebrand the DCEU. Vaughns take on Superman would fit right in.
