Warner Bros. and DC are making a lot of choices lately, and one of those choices is having multiple movies featuring the Joker, but not all featuring the actor who first played the character canonically in their universe. Jared Leto is not being courted for the Martin Scorsese-produced Joker origin movie, a move that makes sense considering they’re probably going for someone younger (but which does not make sense considering… who in the world was asking for a Joker origin movie??). Leto is, understandably, “a little confused” about the whole thing, but he also gets it. Kinda.

“I’m a little confused, too,” Leto told On Demand Entertainment during a promotional appearance for the video game Destiny 2, the launch for which he and 30 Seconds to Mars bandmate Tomo Milicevic attended on Wednesday. But he went on to say that the DCEU is a big universe with plenty of room for many, many Jokers (cue ominous, twi$ted music).

I love the Joker. He’s a great character and really fun character to play. But it’s a big universe and when you play the Joker, there’s no ownership there. You have the honor of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off. There are other films that are in development and I’m excited to see what comes from them.

The Joker is like Batman is like James Bond is like Dracula is like a ton of other immortal pop culture icons who will appear again and again in movies and TV played by a slew of actors, and it’s good to see that Leto gets that, even if he was initially “displeased” by the news of the origin movie. The only thing the rest of us have to worry about is… more Joker movies.
