Lately there have been reports of Metallica preparing to record new material. According to lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, we may be wrapping our ears around new Metallica sooner than you think...

Here's what Kirk told Rolling Stone  about their latest "recording project":

"We want to record it in two weeks. We had planned on doing it in March, but we pushed it back to May. I don't want to give too much away, but it's not really 100 percent a Metallica record. It's a recording project, let's put it that way. Without getting too deep into it, it's more a recording project than a bona fide Metallica album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen."

So what exactly does this mean? A cover album, a collaboration featuring other artists, a foray into rap metal? Ok probably not that last one, but the one thing that is for sure is that we will have new Metallica songs before the year is out.

Personally I think this is the best idea these dudes have had in a very long time. This is a HUGE departure from their approach to the two previous albums St. Anger and Death Magnetic, both of which took OVER a year to record. Anyone who watched Some Kind of Monster knows how arduous the recording of that album was. While Death Magnetic was light years beyond St. Anger, it still failed to give you that special something you get from Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning. A little spontaneity might actually be just what the band needs to re-invent themselves (or to just return to their late 80's kick-assery). We'll be waiting Metallica... BRING IT!

Here's proof that the mighty Metallica can still kick ass (not to mention one of the better videos I've seen in a long time).
