Knotfest Night One Features Scintillating Slipknot, Return of Lamb of God, + More

Mary Ouellette,

Night one of Slipknot‘s two-night, two-location Knotfest was everything fans had hoped it would be. The group pulled in a stellar lineup to play the Mid-American Motorplex in Council Bluffs, Iowa and left audiences with a night they’ll remember.

The headliners ripped through a solid set, bolstered by such fan favorites as ‘Wait and Bleed,’ ‘Vermillion,’ ‘The Heretic Anthem,’ ‘Psychosocial,’ and ‘People = S—’ among others, before finishing the night with ‘Surfacing’ and ‘Til We Die.’ It was made all the more special by the fact that the band were able to stage the inaugural festival in their home state in front of an insane crowd.

The evening also featured the highly anticipated return to the stage for Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe, who had been jailed for the better portion of a month in the Czech Republic over an alleged manslaughter case relating to a fan death from an undetected injury sustained at a show. The band headlined the second stage and shook off the rust with a blistering set for the Iowa audience.

Other top draws Serj Tankian and Deftones also enjoyed solid sets. Tankian provided a mixture of older favorites like ‘The Unthinking Majority,’ ‘Sky Is Over,’ and ‘Empty Walls,’ with newer tracks like ‘Harakiri’ and ‘Uneducated Democracy,’ the latter of which received its performance debut at Knotfest.

Deftones, meanwhile, also had some new music to attend to as ‘Rosemary,’ a recently debuted new song, continued to be part of their set. They also worked through such past favorites as ‘Diamond Eyes,’ ‘My Own Summer (Shove It),’ and ‘Change (In the House of Flies).’ The set was also notable as Tankian, who has been sharing stages with Deftones as a member of System of a Down, hopped up to join the group for a performance of ‘Mein.’

Knotfest moves on to the Minneapolis area tonight. If you’re not able to make it, be sure to sign up for the pay-per-view event at Event Live View.
