Breaking news: Kurt Russell is a busy guy who doesn’t have time to keep up with all these Marvel movies and superhero what’s-its. If you were Kurt Russell, aka Snake Plissken, aka Captain Ron, aka R.J. MacReady, aka Stuntman Mike, aka a Stone Cold Badass, would you make watching all the latest movies a priority? No, which is why it should not come as a shock that Russell has yet to watch Guardians of the Galaxy — even though he’s in talks for a very important role in its sequel.

While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russell confirmed to host Josh Horowitz that he is in talks to play Peter Quill’s dad in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2…there’s just one thing: the actor says he hasn’t even seen the first one yet:

I literally got a phone call two days ago about this. I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know anything about it. I’m one of the four idiots that’s never seen it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it. So, I didn’t realize that the man [James Gunn] had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it, and I have to watch the movie because I can’t bring anything for you. I’ve got nothing to offer here.’ So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do.

Even humorous self-deprecation looks cool on Kurt Russell. The dude could wear an Urkel costume and he’d still be a tough guy icon.

At any rate, Russell will probably set aside some time very soon to rent Guardians of the Galaxy on Amazon or whatever and snuggle up with Goldie Hawn and a big bowl of popcorn (what do you think they put on theirs? I bet they like garlic) and finally watch James Gunn’s superhero space opera. Do you think he’ll like it? We’ll find out when and if Marvel confirms his casting.

Gunn is currently in pre-production on the sequel, with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Dave Bautista set to reprise their roles as the titular heroes. Saldana also recently confirmed the return of Benicio Del Toro as The Collector, with Oldboy star Pom Klementieff appearing in a mystery role — though it’s likely she’s playing Mantis.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
