Legalizing marijuana by way of ballot initiative, that is gathering enough signatures to get an issue in front of voters, is an expensive task. In fact, these types of campaigns can cost millions of dollars and still fail. That is the reason that when it comes to legalizing a cannabis industry in Michigan, or any state for that matter, there is a certain momentum that can almost be predicted by the amount of funding a particular organization has received.

Among the three proposals to legalize weed in Michigan in 2016, a couple of them have financial support from the business community, which is needed to be successful, while the third has been relying on small independent donations.

MiLegalize, the group, which seems to have the best chance at leading the state into the green, says they will need to raise at least $500,000 just to make it passed the signature collecting portion of the campaign. Once this aspect has been achieved, it is conceivable that the group will need at least that much to market the proposal, as well as to combat the opposing forces that will emerge to shut it down.

During a recent fundraising campaign, MiLegalize raised $60,000 in contributions, as well as received promises for thousands more. One anonymous donor even agreed to match the donations for the next 30 days up to $100,000.

The initiative proposed by MiLegalize will legalize a recreational cannabis market in Michigan similar to what is happening in Colorado.
