Halestorm‘s Lzzy Hale teamed up with band members from Taylor Swift’s band, Accept, the Dead Deads and others at a tribute concert for the late Chris Cornell this past weekend in Nashville. The “Say Hello to Heaven” concert at Basement East was the latest contribution to the wealth of tributes that continue to pour in for Cornell since his death in May.

During the show, Hale and her cohorts performed covers of Soundgarden‘s “Black Hole Sun” and Temple of the Dog‘s “Hunger Strike.” See fan-shot footage at the top and bottom of this post. Hale had posted a poignant tribute on her Instagram page shortly after Cornell’s passing. “There are no words to describe my feelings about Chris Cornell’s sudden passing. His influence on me and the way so many others approached the microphone will always show itself in the music we create,” she said.

In a recent interview with the 97.7 WQLZ radio station, Hale also said of Cornell: “Honestly, Soundgarden was a huge building block with my bandmates, ’cause that band… that kind of knocked me out of my ’80s obsession. That was the band that brought me into the ’90s and the magic of that. I remember… I think it was a couple of days after I met Joe [Hottinger], he ended up giving me — back when you used to burn CDs — he gave me this kind of mixed tape of… there was Down On The Upside and there was some stuff from Superunknown, and it blew my freaking mind, because I hadn’t really dug into that band yet. And it literally… I think it helped shape our Halestorm sound.”

“Nobody approached the microphone like [Chris] did,” she continued. “There was just this effortless… and all these different characters that he developed over records, which is something I always kind of go to. We’re actually doing that in the studio now — we’re, like, ‘This about all the characters that Chris Cornell had and how he used them in every song.’ There were a couple of different voices. And we discussed that even before he passed, we discussed this over the years.”

Hale added, “It’s just so sad to lose another one. He’s such a great talent, and it’s so incredibly heartbreaking that he’s gone now.” The band is currently writing and recording material for their next album as well as wrapping up a summer tour.

Halestorm’s third covers EP, ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP, was released last January on Atlantic Records. The EP was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Korn).
