It's easy to draw up comparisons to Fury Road, but this guzzoline-fueled trailer for Mad Max's upcoming game is a completely different trip through the wasteland.

Now that we've had a good look at Mad Max's gameplay, Avalanche Studios has released a trailer focusing on its story. Thankfully, Mad Max isn't going to be a rehash of the story of Fury Road. Instead, this game will stand on its own as a new Max Rockatansky tale with a few links back to George Miller's apocalyptic series. While you're bound to recognize themes, elements and perhaps a name or two, Mad Max is meant to exist as a standalone game, meaning that it'll feature its own characters, plot and setting, but it does have a few interesting connections to the series. One theme that returns is Max's sense of isolation. After losing all that he holds dear and facing the worst in humanity over the years, Max is very skeptical and untrusting of anyone he encounters, regardless of their intentions.

Series creator and director George Miller helped Avalanche Studios in steering Max in the right direction during the title's early stages of development. Like Fury Road, Max's iconic Interceptor vehicle will be missing for most of the game. Max's ride was stolen by Scabrous Scrotus, a villainous warlord who is in charge of the oil refinery and bandit city of Gas Town. It's interesting to note that Scab is the son of Immortan Joe, the antagonist of Fury Road (FYI: Joe is played by the same actor who portrayed Toecutter in the first Mad Max film). Scab has his own legion of War Boys at his command. It's up to Max and his only companion, a mechanic named Chum (short for Chumbucket), to make a new car/death machine to help take on Scab's forces.

Mad Max will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Sept. 1.
