Tough break (literally) for Mastodon guitarist-singer Brent Hinds, who revealed that he broke his leg trying to start his motorcycle. The injury will force Hinds to miss his upcoming shows with Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, the supergroup that also features Alice in Chains singer William DuVall and Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman.

Hinds revealed the news via an Instagram post (see below) showing his leg wrapped up in ice, with a scantily clad young woman in the background. He wrote: "Broke my fucking leg starting my motorcycle goddamnit sorry to all the shows I was about to play with gto and west and more and fiend without a face. lifes a bitch then you die :(happy thanking !"

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra were supposed to kick off their first-ever U.S tour on Nov. 29 in Boston. It's unclear at this point whether the entire tour will be canceled or if another musician will take Hinds' place. The other bands he referred to in the Instagram post are his side projects West End Motel and Fiend Without a Face.

Meanwhile, Mastodon have been in the studio in recent weeks working on their upcoming album, due in 2017.

Update: Giraffe Tongue Orchestra have officially bowed out of their upcoming tour, choosing not to perform without Hinds. Their statement can be read below.

“We deeply regret to inform everyone that GTO has to cancel our U.S. tour. Brent Hinds broke his leg in a motorcycle incident. It requires surgery and traveling for him is both impractical and highly ill-advised. We can’t do our debut tour without our guy. In our view, this is a “Go all-out or don’t go at all” situation. So we had to make the very tough call to cancel.
The venues should be providing refunds. No words can convey how sorry we are to everyone who was planning on attending these shows, just as no words can express how much we were looking forward to bringing the songs from the “Broken Lines” album to you live.
The important thing is that, aside from his broken leg, Brent is otherwise okay. He will hopefully make a full recovery soon and we’ll all live to fight another day. And, with that, our goal becomes carving out our next opportunity to play. One thing is sure: We will let you know as soon as we know. Until then, keep jamming “Broken Lines.” Have a wonderful – and SAFE – holiday season.
With love, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra
