A Michigan judge has sentenced three young children to jail after they refused to participate in a court ordered lunch date with their dad.

Reports indicate that during the messy divorce between Maya Eibschitz-Tsimhoni and Omer Tsimhoni, the couple's three kids, ages 9, 10 and 15, were supposed to attend a mandatory meal with their father. However, the kids snubbed the judge’s order to break bread with their old man, so he found them in contempt-of-court and sent the next several years in a juvenile detention center.

If the kids do not change their mind about having lunch with their father, the judge claims they will remain locked up until their 18th birthday. Wow...is this dad really that much of a jerk?

Protestors have been out in full force campaigning against the judge’s choice to lock up children as young as 9-years-old. And rightfully so… juvenile detention centers are responsible for housing the next generation of murders, pedophiles, and rapists; the kind of place responsible for turning Charles Manson into the infamous beast has become known for today.

As an advocate against using incarceration for non-violent offenses, I believe the judge is setting these kids up for immense failure -- putting them in a position to become violent criminals when they get older. Locking up otherwise good kids just to prove a point is wrong. There is a reason, after all, why these youngsters are not keen on spending time with their father. Perhaps they should given some slack and allowed to come around in their own time. Divorce is not easy on children.
