Without a doubt, the topic of marijuana legalization is set to become one of the most highly debated issues of the next year. Although several groups are working to legalize the leaf in Michigan during the next presidential election, one local lawmaker hopes to beat them to the punch by addressing it in the state legislature.

Earlier last week, State Representative Jeff Irwin submitted House Bill 4877, which would legalize a statewide cannabis industry that would regulate weed like alcohol. In a nutshell, the bill would allow adults 21 and over to purchase recreational pot products from retail dispensaries in the same way most people now buy beer.

However, the bill will reportedly allow individual cities to opt out of the retail aspect of legalization, while forcing ever city to eliminate possession of marijuana from its criminal code.
