It has been awhile since anyone mentioned Ebola. In fact, many of you may even believe that this deadly virus is no longer a threat to civil society.

However, a recent report from WOOD-TV indicates there may still be some cause for concern, as Michigan was recently given $5.5 million to train health care professionals how to combat the virus.

It appears as though the United States Department of Health and Human Services has set up three training facilities across the nation – one of which happens to be right here in Michigan. The official goal is to have a staff prepared to handle an epidemic that compares to the one that unfolded in 2014…or one even worse.

“I think that ever since the cases left the United States or there were no more cases in the United States, we kind of forgot about it,” said Brian Hartl of the Kent County Health Department. “I think just the fact that we kind of put it in the background a little bit kind of speaks to the need for it, ’cause I think that’s kind of human nature to put something behind you if you don’t see it all the time. And with Ebola, obviously, you always need to be prepared.”

Although not in any official report, there is speculation that another Ebola outbreak could rear its ugly head again this year.
