Scientists from the University of Michigan say that in upwards of half of the water on Earth is nearly 4.5 billion years old, which is older than the sun and the solar system.

In a study published in the latest edition of Science, researchers say that they have discovered a specific element in water that is consistently found throughout the solar system. They claim this phenomenon could only be possible if water was created before any other space junk.

"It's pretty amazing that a significant fraction of water on Earth predates the sun and the solar system," said lead researcher Ilse Cleeves.

Interestingly, scientists are still confused about how water came to Earth, since they say the development of the Earth was too hot for water to form. Yet, they believe that water likely came from ice that formed as a result of the same gas cloud that created the sun… that or the birth of a star gave way to interstellar water.
