The legalization of recreational marijuana will soon be up for debate right here in Flint. The Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Initiative, one of the groups fighting to legalize a statewide cannabis industry in 2016, will be holding a town hall meeting this weekend in order to gauge where residents stand on the issue.

The meeting, which will be overseen by the organization’s executive director Matthew Abel, will take place on Sunday, April 19 at The Sweet Leaf. The gathering is, of course, open to the public and will include a question and answer segment in hopes of refining the current proposal to make the issue of legal weed palatable to more residents.

Other activists scheduled to be in attendance, include Rick Thompson of Michigan NORML and Americans for Safe Access-Michigan and Cary Justice, who heads Safer Saginaw.

So far, the proposal seeks to legalize retail marijuana sales to adults over the age of 21. It includes provisions that would allow for the cultivation and distribution of the herb and a 10 percent excise tax that would fund schools and transportation – the majority of these taxes would be spent on roadway improvements.

The organization needs to collect around 250,000 signatures to earn a spot on the ballot in the November 2016 election. They will have 180 days to make this happen, so it is imperative that the group receive as much support as possible.

Flint residents that would like additional information about the upcoming town hall meeting should call 810-259-2571.
