United Pet Group is recalling multiple brands of rawhide dog chews because they may be contaminated with a chemical used to clean food processing equipment.

The recall includes the following products:

  • American Beefhide -  Only products with lot codes listed on the back of the package that start with AH and which list expiration dates from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020 are affected by this recall.
  • Digest-eeze - Only products with lot codes listed on the back of the package that start with AH, AV, A, AI, AO, or AB, and which list expiration dates from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020 are affected by this recall.
  • Healthy Hide (including Healthy Hide Good -n- Fun and Healthy Hide Good -n- Fit) - Only products with lot codes listed on the back of the package that start with AH, AV, A, AI, AO, or AB and which list expiration dates from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020 are affected by this recall.

Honestly, these things are terrible for dogs anyway but if you did happen to purchase any of the above rawhides, you can contact the United Pet Group consumer affairs team at 1-855-215-4962 between the hours of 8:00 AM – 11:00 PM Eastern Standard Time for a refund. You're also urged to dispose of the product or return it directly to the retail establishment where you initially purchased the product for full refund.

According to WNEM, The chemical can cause reduced appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea, if ingested by dogs. Depending on the severity, these symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian.

I will not buy rawhide for my dog because it's so easy for little pieces/splinters to get caught in his throat and there's just a lot of nasty ingredients that are so bad for dogs. To top it off, he's highly allergic to them anyway.
