Munky: I’ll Love Deftones Whether They Tour With Korn or Not

Deftones singer Chino Moreno made headlines when he said he didn’t want his band to tour with Korn, explaining that he wanted Deftones to distance themselves from the nu metal genre. We recently interviewed Korn guitarist Munky and got his thoughts on Moreno’s comments.

To recap, Moreno told Metal Hammer, “We did make a very conscious choice of who we were going to play shows with. It was hard to be this young band and having to turn down tours. I can’t remember how many times I turned down Korn! And they got pissed at us. Jonathan [Davis] would say, ‘Why do you hate us?’ and I didn’t know what to say. I’d tell him, ‘Dude, I don’t hate you. I love you guys, you’re my friends. But I don’t want to tour with you. I don’t want to be on the Family Values with you and Limp Bizkit.’ The name of the genre was nu metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old.”

Following some backlash online, the Deftones frontman later backed off those statements. When asked by BBC 1 which band he’d like to tour with, he responded, “I’m going to go ahead and say Korn — contrary to all the hate mail I woke up to yesterday … I would do shows with them, I would definitely do shows with them.”

At the recent Rock on the Range festival, Loudwire Nights host Toni Gonzalez asked Munky about Moreno’s stance, and the Korn guitarist responded, “I’m such a big Deftones fan. It doesn’t matter to me, honestly. I’ll love them if I get to see them every night and play with them, or I’ll love them like I have been for so many years.”

As for whether the bands will ever tour together, Munky says, “I think it’ll happen at one point. Maybe it’s a festival or whatever, but I think [it’ll happen] if the fans and everybody kind of wishes it into the universe.” See Munky’s full thoughts on the matter in the video interview above.

For now, Korn will have a very solid tourmates on their upcoming “Serenity of Summer” trek, featuring Stone Sour, Skillet and more. See the dates here. Meanwhile, Deftones will spend the summer touring with Rise Against. Check out those dates here.
