If you're a metalhead, chances are you know Finland is the most metal country on the planet. It is not uncommon to hear brutal death metal on the radio and Finnish metal bands regularly top charts in the country. While welcoming Nordic leaders to the White House on Friday (May 13), President Obama acknowledged Finland's metal culture in his speech.

"I do wanna point out that Finland has, perhaps, the most heavy metal bands in the world per capita and also ranks high on good governance. I don't know if there's any correlation there," President Obama quipped in the video above, continuing, "Thanks to Nordic innovators, we share our music on Spotify, stay in touch by Skype and millions spend what would otherwise be productive hours on Minecraft, Angry Birds and Candy Crush."

Last year, Finland released a series of stamps to honor some of their biggest rock and metal artists, issuing special postage for Children of Bodom, Nightwish, HIM, Apocalyptica, Hanoi Rocks and the Rasmus. Children of Bodom and Nightwish have both netted six No. 1 albums in their native country. Each HIM album has charted inside the Top 5, yielding four No. 1 records and three consecutive No. 2 albums.

President Obama has addressed metal in a previous speech while bestowing Capt. Florent Groberg with a Medal of Honor. While Groberg was in the hospital after attempting to thwart a suicide bomber, he awoke in a haze. With someone at his bedside, he thought he was talking to Korn singer Jonathan Davis, leading President Obama to say “Today Flo, I want to assure you you are not hallucinating. You are actually in the White House. Those cameras are on, and I am not the lead singer from Korn.”
