The world of Marvel’s Netflix Defenders threw a curveball months back with news that Jon Bernthal’s Punisher might garner his own post-Daredevil Season 2 spinoff after all, but the rumor may have been gunned down. Marvel TV brass say reports of a potential Punisher solo series were exaggerated, at least for now.

DigitalSpy reported comments from Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb in addressing Punisher’s post-Daredevil Season 2 fate, leaving just a bit of wiggle room, but otherwise downplaying the prospect:

I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening … It’s certainly our hope that any of our characters will be embraced and that people want to see more of them.

Rumors of additional Punisher content have been flying for months now, including suggestions that the gun-toting Marvel vigilante might step in for Iron Fist as the fourth Netflix Defender, following reports of difficulty locking down a tone. The idea has also been spurred by early word of Bernthal’s Daredevil Season 2 performance, said to be worthy of his own title at the least.

So reads the official Daredevil Season 2 synopsis:

Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios.

Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.
