Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme Appears in Glen Campbell Video

Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme has been a party to many off-the-wall collaborations in his day, but perhaps none as surprising as his latest. In a new interview, Homme explains how his appearance in the farewell music video from Glen Campbell came to be.

Campbell is heralded as a country music legend and has played a key, yet sometimes under-the-radar, role in popular music. Many fans were saddened to learn that he would be forced to step away from music for good due to increasing complications caused by Alzheimers. Campbell’s career is capped off by the music video to his song ‘A Better Place,’ which features an unlikely guest appearance from the QOTSA frontman.

While the two may seem like an odd couple, Homme explains that his love for Campbell dates as far back as childhood. “It was just part of my soundtrack to being a kid at home,” Homme tells Paste Magazine of Campbell’s music. “When I got a little older and into picking my own music, I realized he was in The Beach Boys, started hearing his earlier music and seeing the full scope of what an incredible guitar player and recording artist he was too. The amount of sessions and songs is incredible. He is a superstar of music. Between that and his TV show, I began to get a clue that being a musician is more than just playing an instrument.”

So when Kii Arens, a friend of Homme’s, landed the gig to direct the music video, Josh wasn’t far behind. “I believe his exact words were ‘Do you want to play the bartender from ‘The Shining’ in the last Glen Campbell video?’ and mine were ‘Of course I do!’” Homme says of his cameo. “I’m ecstatic. I’m humbled. I’m lucky. I’m honored. I’d have carried lights and cameras to do it.”

Aside from doing guests spots in other artists’ videos and songs, Homme has been hard at work on Queens of the Stone Age’s sixth full-length studio album and follow-up to 2007′s ‘Era Vulgaris.’ Although not much is known about the status of the “top secret” record, it has been in-the-works for well over a year and is expected to be released at some point in 2012.
