Outspoken liberal political commentator and MSNBC television personality Rachael Maddow recently gave the genre of death metal a shout-out on her program, ‘The Rachel Maddow Show.’ While Maddow explored the notion that Tampa, Florida, is the “strip club capitol of America,” the host also presented some research about Tampa Bay possibly being the death metal capital of America. Her findings were quite profound.

Unfortunately for the residents of Tampa, the city comes in at a still-respectable No. 3 when it comes to strip clubs, with both Las Vegas and Cincinnati honing more strip clubs per capita than Tampa. However, the home of the Rays was honored with the title of ‘America’s Death Metal Mecca’ on Maddow’s ‘Debunktion Junction’ segment of her show. The program also aired the video for Deicide‘s ‘Homage for Satan,’ with Maddow suggesting that Tampa tourists who are in town for the Republican National Convention take in some culture by attending a death metal show.

Although Maddow and her writing team are certainly correct when it comes to Tampa hosting the most important array of early death metal, including bands such as Deicide, Morbid Angel and Obituary, we at Loudwire would like to offer a slight correction to the findings of ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ and Reuters, who write, “Tampa gave the world death metal.” For our money, we credit Orlando, Florida as the city that gave us the world’s first death metal band, Death. San Francisco could also rationally claim that they brewed the death metal primordial stew, with the band Possessed.

In closing, we’d like to thank the people at ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ for the death metal shout-out, and we would also like to offer our services as the program’s official death metal experts. Your move, Maddow. Call us!
