Detroit Red Wings hockey legend Gordie Howe has passed away at the age of 88.

After the initial reports, the Detroit Red Wings confirmed the news.

The Hall of Famer known as 'Mr. Hockey' suffered a stroke in October 2014, but recovered after traveling to Mexico to receive stem cell treatment.

Gordie Howe is widely considered one of greatest hockey players of all-time, if not the greatest. Howe, originally hailing from Floral, Saskatchewan, played 26 seasons in the National Hockey League between 1946 and 1980, 25 of which were spent under a Detroit Red Wings sweater.

Howe was a double threat, in that he was an incredible scorer and a physical player. He went on to lead the Red Wings to four Stanley Cups and first place in the regular season seven consecutive seasons, the latter of which is still a record that has yet to be matched or broken. Individual records held by the legend include finishing among the top 5 scorers in the league for 20 consecutive seasons, and more than 20 goals in 22 consecutive seasons.

Howe is one of the most respected and beloved players to ever lace up skates, especially among Red Wings fans. Last March, he celebrated his 88th birthday at Joe Louis Arena where the sold-out crowd gave him a standing ovation and sang Happy Birthday.
