Unofficial results from Tuesday show Flint residents voting to rewrite the city's charter for the first time in 40 years.

According to MLive, 56 percent had approved (at time of writing) Proposal 1 which will trigger a top-to-bottom charter review that will begin in February with an election of a nine-member charter review commission. Voters will have the final say in a referendum election over any changes proposed by the commission.

Other proposals regarding the city charter:

  • Proposal 2 which will reduce the number of mayoral staff appointments from no more than 10 to no more than five was approved.
  • Proposal 3 which would add a charter amendment to require budgetary best practices was approved.
  • Proposal 4 which would eliminate the requirement for certain executive departments was defeated.
  • Proposal 5 which would have eliminated the Civil Service Commission failed.
  • Proposal 6 which would have eliminated the Office of Ombudsmen was also defeated.
