A number of outlets are reporting that Sega is releasing their own Genesis retro console in October to compete with Nintendo. Calm down, internet. This thing has been out for several years already.

When I noticed that the Sega Mega Drive Classic Game Console was trending on Facebook this morning, I laughed out loud. I understand the excitement, most of which is due to Nintendo creating a nostalgia tornado with their recent announcement of a similar machine, but several outlets are reporting this system as being new. It's not new, and they're wrong about a few things. Here's what you should know:

  1. This system has already been out for years. Several years.
  2. You can usually get them for $40 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond (click here), or from a number of other retailers. Hell, wait until after Christmas and get one  on sale for $25 at any store with "Dollar" in their name.
  3. It only has 40 Genesis games. The other 40 are crappy Pong-like arcade games. However, one of said Genesis games is 'Streets of Rage 2' -- the dopest game of all time. This is not a debate. If you don't like SoR2 -- get out of my country.
  4. It does have a cartridge slot that will take old games, unlike Nintendo's upcoming release.
  5. The handheld version does have an SD card slot that allows you to play ROMs, but the console version does not.

If you want to wait until October to pay full retail ($49.99) for this -- you are a fool. It's actually a better deal than the Nintendo retro system, but, again, is inferior to a softmodded Wii that can play all the retro titles.

You might be asking, "What is a softmodded Wii?" Well my friend, you are in luck. I already wrote a detailed article about how you can turn your old, useless Nintendo Wii into a retro gaming beast with all the games.

Remember, just because it's news to you -- doesn't mean it's actually news. Do your homework, kiddos.
