Remember last year when Neill Blomkamp released his Alien concept art? Remember losing your cool when he announced his Alien movie was actually happening? And then Ridley Scott walked in and seemingly swooped all those dreams away.

Hope for Blomkamp’s Aliens sequel, which is said to take place between Aliens and Alien 3, quickly dwindled last year when the project was put on indefinite hold to make room for Scott’s prequel Alien: Covenant. But Sigourney Weaver, a beacon of shining hope, wants fans to know that her Alien film with Blomkamp might still happen.

At an event for software company VMware, Weaver answered questions about the Blomkamp project, via The Playlist. When asked if the film was still going to happen, Weaver said, “Well, I think it is,” [emphasis The Playlist]. The actress referenced Scott’s desire to film and release his Prometheus sequel first, but instilling more hope in Alien fans, revealed that there is indeed a script for the Blomkamp project:

It’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn’t do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.

Blomkamp’s Aliens sequel was originally planned for a 2017 release, but since Alien: Covenant doesn’t open until August 4, 2017, we can likely expect it by 2018 at the earliest. The District 9 director has said the film will have a strong connection to the first two Alien movies, but won’t entirely ignore Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. The original plan for the film was to feature Weaver’s Ripley alongside Michael Biehn’s Hicks and a grown up Newt, who would be the new hero of the franchise. Whether or not you’re a fan of that idea, let’s hold judgement until Blomkamp’s vision gets closer to the screen.
