Stone Sour are taking a page out of the Avenged Sevenfold playbook in order to play their Rock in Rio gig this month -- they've recruited ex-Dream Theater stickman Mike Portnoy as the temporary fill-in for Roy Mayorga.

Stone Sour canceled their few remaining tour dates earlier this year (including Rock on the Range 2011) when drummer Roy Mayorga suffered a minor stroke. He has since recovered but now faces another obstacle which will prevent him from Stone Sour's next scheduled gig in Rio -- the birth of his child.

Since Mayorga will be attending the birth of his daughter, who is due the day of the show, Stone Sour brought in recent drummer-for-hire -- Mike Portnoy -- for the show which takes place September 24th. Frontman Corey Taylor said of the one-off gig with Portnoy behind the kit:

"We've been waiting a long time for the opportunity to come to South America. This year's Rock in Rio should be fantastic. With Roy expecting his first child, we'll charge on without him, but having Mike fill in for this one show will be great. We can't wait to take the stage and lay it down the only way Stone Sour knows how- full on and in your face!"

Portnoy added:

"It’s an unexpected treat for me to get another visit with some of the greatest fans in the world down in Brazil."

Portnoy recently dropped out of Dream Theater (who have since moved on) while touring with Avenged Sevenfold, another gig that (he may or may not have been aware) was temporary. Stone Sour has a live DVD (that will be packaged with an EP of cover songs) they are planning to release this winter.
