X-Men

Keeping the series of films featuring or tangentially related to the X-Men straight has become a task on par with reading Bleak House. The original three films from the 2000s were their own thing, at first independent of the rebooted X-Men: First Class set in the past. But they were then woven into the “present” with Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, which happen to be set in both timelines and physical dimensions. All this operates separately from Logan and Wolverine’s other solo films, and while Deadpool technically is set in the main universe, it can’t really bring in any of the major pre-existing characters due to intellectual property complications, so it might as well be an isolated entity as well. It’s a lot to keep track of, to put it mildly.

You probably know that Logan is based on the Marvel Comics series “Old Man Logan” by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. But did you know that Logan really came together when Hugh Jackman woke up in the middle of the night after a long conversation (and a few drinks) about Wolverine with Chappie director Neill Blomkamp? Jackman recorded a voice memo on his phone of what he wanted the movie to look like and eventually that became Logan. That’s just one of the facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!

By now, everyone knows that Logan is Hugh Jackman’s last go-round as Wolverine. It’s tough to see him go — he’s arguably the protagonist of the original X-Men trilogy and was always a welcome presence in the new crop of movies, but he’s a big star now, and Logan is a tone-perfect way to round out his career as that character. Now, the question becomes: who, if anyone, will take his place? The X-Men series will still continue for at least one more movie, and there are a number of spinoffs in the works, so Wolverine will have to reappear somehow, right?

Last week’s Logan trailer showed a very different vision of Marvel’s favorite mutant, about as far cry from an X-Men movie as we ever expected. The upcoming Wolverine sequel has long been hyped as Hugh Jackman’s final outing as the iconic hero, but he may not be the only one preparing to say farewell to the X-Men franchise. In a new interview, Patrick Stewart reveals that Wolverine 3 (or 2, if you’re ignoring X-Men Origins) may very well feature his last appearance as Professor Charles Xavier.

Early reviews of X-Men: Apocalypse haven’t been particularly welcoming, even as the nine-film franchise seemingly skews closer and closer to the colorful weirdness of its comic heyday. Many a fan jump right back to the ‘90s X-Men: The Animated Series (and its inimitable theme) as a pinnacle of X-nostalgia, now appropriately given the “Honest Trailer” treatment just in time for the movie!
