This morning (June 5), fans of Tenacious D woke to the news on Twitter that its co-creator, actor and musician Jack Black, had died. However, it appears to have been the work of a hack.

Over the course of three successive tweets, the message read, "I'm sad to officially annouce the death of Jack Black at the age of 46, rest in peace brother. #RipJackBlack. It is with a heavy heart I am to announce that Jack Black passed away last night at 3:37am. The cause of death is yet unknown." The original tweet that announced Black's death has been retweeted more than 2,800 times.

But a little more than an hour later, the hacker, who goes by the screenname of @Ruthless, came clean. "Calm down guys! It's just a prank bro, look there's the camera...The Legend is still alive, it is ok guys :)"

The group regained control of their account, and, at 10:27AM Eastern, wrote, "WE had our Twitter account hacked. We can assure you that Jack is ALIVE and WELL and that this was a sick 'prank.'" They have since deleted the tweets from their timeline.

This weekend, Tenacious D were in Germany to play the Rock am Ring Festival on Friday. That night, more than 80 people were injured as a result of lightning strikes on the festival grounds. Although the organizers attempted to continue with the festival on Saturday, the performances -- including the headlining slot by Red Hot Chili Peppers -- were again halted by the weather, and today's final day was canceled by local authorities.
