‘That Metal Show’ Recap: Vinnie Paul Says ‘Some Stones Are Better Left Unturned’ Regarding Pantera Reunion

Last night’s episode (May 19) was the season finale of Season 10 of that ‘Metal Show’ and it closed on a high note with Pantera and Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul, who dropped by to discuss the 20th anniversary edition of ‘Vulgar Display of Power.’ It was a repeat engagement for the sticks handler, who guested on the show back when it filmed in NYC.

First things first. When asked about the possibility of a Pantera reunion, the drummer simply stated, “If Dime was still here, it would still be a possibility. We had 14 great years. I am proud of it, but some stones are better left unturned.” So it sounds like he has no interest in reforming or resurrecting Pantera without his late brother, guitarist Dimebag Darrell.

Vin said that he can’t believe it’s been 20 years since ‘Vulgar’ dropped, but that it was the most important record of the band’s career, even though its successor ‘Far Beyond Driven’ took it a whole other level. ‘A New Level,’ maybe? Paul recalled that the ‘Vulgar’ period was the strongest and closest of their career, when no one could tell them “no,” not their managers, not their label, not anyone.

The drummer also spoke about the cover, revealing that the person who appears on it “was paid 10 dollars a punch and someone hit him 30 times. He got $300 to get punched in the face. I dunno who he is, or where he is, but he is a famous character.”

Regarding ‘Piss,’ the “lost” track added to the anniversary edition track list, the skinsman revealed all he had to do was mix it and it was good to go. He also said that it is the only of its kind — as in there are no other unearthed Pantera tunes.

Season 11 of ‘TMS’ is set to air sometime this summer.
