Never before has there been a superhero movie with this big of a build to it's release. It may have taken five separate films to set up, but 'The Avengers' is a lock to become of the biggest blockbusters of all time when it hits theaters in May 2012.

#5. 'The Avengers'

Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson

Superhero movies are a mixed bag. Some are great ('Iron Man,' 'X-Men,' 'Spider-man'), some are terrible ('Fantastic Four,' 'Superman Returns,' 'Daredevil'). The latest entry from Marvel Studios could go either way, but the people behind the project (mainly 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' creator Joss Whedon) have us thinking it will be a gallon jars-worth of awesome sauce.

Though I would've preferred to see Spider-Man included in the roster that features Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, and Black Widow.  Robert Downey Jr.'s charismatic portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man leads a group of several well-known actors involved in the film -- Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner -- but the main star will be action, and lots of it.

The plot has something to do with The Avengers thwarting an alien invasion (possibly by The Skrulls) and battling Thor's brother Loki here on Earth. While not much is known about the specific plot details -- the trailer makes it look like one hell of a ride. 'The Avengers' hits theaters May 4th, 2012.
