Corrections officers at Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Ionia spotted an unwelcomed guest the other day. A drone was spotted over the yard area dropping packages near the housing units.

Upon investigating, the drone returned and dropped another package into the prison. The items being dropped were a cell phone and drugs. The prison staff alerted the police who were able to locate a vehicle and arrest three suspects.

Michigan Department of Corrections Director Heidi Washington stated:

“I am proud of the prompt and professional response of our staff and for the support and coordination with local law enforcement and the Michigan State Police to apprehend these individuals. Together, their actions kept not only our facility, staff and prisoners safe, but the surrounding community as well.”

Authorities have not yet identified the suspects.
