Tool finished out a short run of U.S. tour dates with a Jan. 31 performance at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. Sadly, the show was marked with a frightening moment when a fan fell from an upper level of the arena, crashing to the area below.

Nearly 14,000 rabid Tool fans filled the Smoothie King Center as the band finished off a successful stint with support from Primus and 3Teeth. According to the New Orleans Advocate, a man either fell or jumped from the 300 level, which is the uppermost part of the venue. "We can confirm that a patron fell," says Smoothie King Center event marking and media coordinator Sabrina Trahan. "An investigation is ongoing."

The fall reportedly happened during Tool's encore and was witnessed by freelance journalist Wesley Hodges. "It was scary," Hodges says. "I caught it out of the corner of my eye. I saw a body coming down and heard a really loud crash. I saw him lying on the ground. There was chaos after that. People were screaming."

Event security reacted extremely quickly, but Hodges did not see what happened to the man. "I walked out," Hodges describes. "I walked out. It was hard to focus on the concert after that."

According to reports, the members of Tool remained unaware of the fall, continuing on with the show.
