If Michigan residents expect to legalize a cannabis market in the next couple of years, residents are going to need to take a more active roll in making it happen. Earlier last week, Banana 101.5 told you about the launch of a new campaign aimed at getting the issue of legal marijuana on the ballot in 2016.

The Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Committee (aka MILegalize) which is a group of drug policy reform advocates, began collecting signatures last Thursday at the Capitol building in Lansing. The group is challenged with collecting 252,523 signatures within the next 180 days in order to earn a spot on the ballot. If they are successful, Michigan voters will get to decide whether or not the state should legalize recreational marijuana in a manner similar to what is currently happening in Colorado. If the campaign fails, residents will be forced to continue to live in prohibitionary times.

Although there is another Michigan proposal seeking to legalize weed, the initiative offered by MILegalize has the best chance of gaining the support of the people. It will legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and over, use the tax money to fund schools and fix roads, as well as providing a wealth of job opportunities across the state.
