Watch Genesee County Jail’s $36 Million Inmate Beatdown We’re Probably Paying For [VIDEO]

Last Thursday, a Detroit court awarded William Jennings a $36.6 million settlement after receiving an excessive beatdown by guards at the Genesee County Jail in September 2010. Guess who will likely have to pay for a big chunk of that -- the taxpayers.

In the video above, you can see Jennings being assaulted by five deputies while in custody at Genesee County Jail. During the assault he was reportedly punched and kicked while on the ground, had his head slammed into a metal bench, and was pepper sprayed directly in the mouth.

While we weren't there, the video does seem like the assault was unprovoked, at least from a physical standpoint. He may have been talking trash, but that comes with the territory when someone is intoxicated (Jennings was arrested for drunk driving), and doesn't warrant that kind of excessive brutality. There aren't many situations that do.

While the verdict may still be subject to appeal, if it stands, Genesee County taxpayers could be on the hook for more than $16 million, as the county's current insurance policy only covers up to $20 million. Historically, these type of things have been added to property tax bills, so don't be surprised if you see a costly new line item in your 2017 summer tax bill labeled "police ass-whooping."
