A Michigan woman attempted to hire a hit man to kill her husband because she believed it was easier than going through with a divorce. However, the man she met to plot out the demise of her husband was not actually a killer for hire – he was an undercover police officer.

Julia Charlene Merfeld of Muskegon was caught on video planning the murder of her husband on two separate occasions, offering who she thought was a hit man a $100 deposit and $50,000 of her husband’s life insurance policy as payment.

In the videos, it is apparent that Merfeld does not hate her husband, but she seems confident that having him murdered is a better alternative to divorce.

“When I first decided to do this … it’s not that we weren’t getting along,” she can be heard saying on the video. “But … terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him.”

Merfeld continues to explain her reasons for wanting her husband dead. "You know, I didn’t have to worry about the judgment of my family, I didn’t have to worry about breaking his heart, all that stuff like this. It’s, like, how I got a clean getaway.”

Incidentally, Merfeld pleaded guilty to solicitation to murder. Her husband asked the judge to show leniency and not make her do any prison time; however, she faces anywhere between six years to life in prison.
