Want to make your voice heard in the 2012 presidential election but haven’t registered to vote yet? Your time is quickly running out! With the presidential, state and local elections now less than 40 days away, the deadline to in Michigan for registering and being able to vote in the November 6th election is Tuesday, October 9th.

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, the state’s chief election officer, reminds citizens that “voting is a fundamental freedom and we want everyone who wants to do so to cast a ballot on Election Day.”

A few important things to point out first. To register to vote you must be:

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • at least 18 years of age by election day;
  • a resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register to vote.

According to the Secretary of State’s website, you can register to vote for federal, state, and local elections by mail; at your county, city, or township clerk’s office; or by visiting any Secretary of State branch office.

You can click here and print out a voter registration application to mail in. However, with the sometimes slow pace of the United States Postal Service, you may want to ignore doing it this way and just hop in the car and take a quick ride to ensure you actually get registered in time. To find the Secretary of State branch office closest to you, click here for their branch locator.
