Lovefood.com took on the tough task of nailing down the best restaurant in each state using awards, reviews, and the genuine experiences of their team of food experts. The foodie publication's pick for the top restaurant in Michigan is Mabel Gray in Hazel Park.

The cinder block building that houses Mabel Gray has a long history of restaurants, previously home to Liza’s Place diner and Ham Heaven.

James Beard award semi-finalist and Top Chef competitor James Rigato opened Mabel Gray in 2015.

The cozy, eclectic eatery focuses on local, seasonal items, so the menu is constantly changing. You might not know what will be on the menu that day - but can you bet it will be delicious!

Chef Rigato works with farms, butchers, and foragers to create fresh, handmade, ethical dishes.

In particular, Lovefood compliments Mabel Gray's duck fat–griddled cornbread, buttermilk-fried skate wing, and chargrilled chicken thighs marinated in Korean chili paste gochujang.

Other dishes featured at Mabel Gray include Crispy Skin Branzino, Fried Brussels Sprouts with Pepperoni Vinaigrette, and a North Dakota Bison & Millbrook Venison Burger.

This is not the first honor Mabel Gray has received. In 2017 it was named restaurant of the year by the Detroit Free Press. It was declared on of the best new restaurants in America by Thrillist and Eater. Mabel Gray has also been named a James Beard Award finalist.
