Ask about Michigan city nicknames and immediately you'll think of Motown for Detroit and Beer City for Grand Rapids. Or maybe that's Furniture City for Grand Rapids - some cities have several names and they ebb and flow over time.

Then there are cities, no matter the size that never found a way to a nickname.

There are several of them in Michigan, and that may surprise you.

We should lay out right from the jump that there is a difference between a city's nickname and either a marketing slogan or derogative name.

Here's the difference: Flint is the Vehicle City. That's a nickname. Michigan's largest city without a nickname is Warren. However it's known as "A Safe and Clean City." That's a marketing slogan or motto, not a nickname.

Finally, a derogatory name like Melvinhole for downriver Melvindale, Taylortucky for Taylor or Sagnasty for Saginaw aren't prideful city nicknames.

Many of the cities, perhaps surprising or not, are Detroit suburbs. Many of these cities were former townships that were later incorporated into cities. Without the city history, it's more difficult to have been known for something that makes the municipality nickname worthy. And that's the reason many of the cities on this list do not bear nicknames.

Another note, the list includes incorporated cities only. So large townships like Clinton, Shelby and Canton are not included.
