The Ghost Town and Ruins of the Fiborn Quarry
Here's a cool little Mackinac County ghost town to visit...
Fiborn used to be an actual little village jammed with limestone crushers, steam shovels, locomotives.....plus a good number of mine buildings. Among all these were a church, homes, and school.
The quarry started in 1905, produced a pretty good output and closed for good in 1936.
FAST FACTS:
1898: Chase Osborn buys 600 acres of privately & state -owned land 1899: Osborn promotes a potential quarry
1904: Workers clear a small area and add buildings, a crushing plant and other equipment
1907: Post office begins, boarding house built, and first year of school with 11 students
1910: Two workers are killed when dynamite explodes prematurely
1911: Crusher boiler explodes, killing one man and injuring seven
1914: Quarry operates 10 hours a day, six days a week
1920: Quarry output falls and remains low during post-WW2 recession.
1921-23: Quarry closed frequently for long periods
1927: 75 residents
1930: Great Depression causes Fiborn Quarry to operate at low capacity
1936: Closed permanently
Another reason the quarry closed was location. It was discovered that it was cheaper to mine limestone down in the lower peninsula in Rogers City and ship it out on Lake Huron.
After closing, Fiborn became one of the Upper Peninsula's coolest ghost towns.
Thanks to Restless Viking, the gallery below takes you thru the ruins and also contains a few photos of Fiborn during their mining days...
